~BPatrick Canny~b was born in County, Donegal, Ireland and immigrated
to the United States at an unknown time. Patrick married ~BSarah

shoemaker/bootmaker by trade. There were five children born to this
marriage: Fanny, Catherine, Mary, Sarah, and Phillip. On August 7,
1865, ~BSarah Louton Canny~b died and was buried in Saint Clair,
Pennsylvania.
Patrick needed a housekeeper to take care of the children and
hired Miss ~BMargaret Dougherty. ~b ~BPatrick Canny~b and ~BMargaret

1867. There were seven children born to this union, Michael J.,
Charles P., Elizabeth, Frances, Anthony P., Edward P., and
Eleanor. These children were all born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.
Soon after Eleanor's birth, the Canny family moved to Pottsville,
Pennsylvania and Patrick set out for the west to hunt for gold.
Margaret turned their home into a boarding house to support the
family. As the boys grew old enough, they worked at the mines picking
slate out of the mined coal.
In 1885, Elizabeth was raped by a boarder which resulted in a
pregnancy. To avoid the scandal, Margaret contacted relatives in
Ottumwa, Iowa and decided to move there. She arranged for the sale of
her home and sent Elizabeth to the home of her stepdaughter,

of the child. After the birth of ~U~u~BCharles A. Canny~I~i~b in 1886, the ent
family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa.
The family settled in a home at 322 North Marion Street. Son
Michael secured a job with the railroad to support the family.
Although their father Patrick maintained correspondence with the
family, he never ever returned from his search for gold. His last
letter indicated he was returning home and he forwarded seven pieces
of rock containing gold. These pieces of rock were from seven claims
he had found. Patrick never arrived and it is assumed he fell victim
to foul play.
Two years after arrival in Ottumwa, Margaret started buying a
building lot in Cooper Addition. By 1892, her three sons built the
family homestead at 620 North Cooper Avenue, Ottumwa, Iowa. In later
years, the stairway to the second floor bedrooms was switched from the
living room to the dining room (formerly the kitchen) when the new
kitchen was added.
The Canny girls were seamstresses/dressmakers by trade. The boys
all took correspondence courses to improve their talents and
interests. Michael became a railroad engineer. Anthony worked for
the railroad, sold insurance and owned a cigar factory producing
"Canny's Old Kid" cigars. He maintained a horned angora goat with
brass horn knobs for a logo. The goat was hitched to a cart for
parades. Edward worked at the Morrell's meat packing plant and for
the Ottumwa Courier where he later became the Editor. All of the
Canny boys belonged to the Knights of Columbus and Michael became a
Grand Knight.
In 1910, Michael asked his brother Anthony and family to move
into and share the old home. Their mother, Margaret was sixty six
years old and in poor health. The Anthony P. Canny family lived in
the home until 1995 when the house was sold to grandson, Phillip A.
Canny. Many family members have shared the house over the years
including the Feeley, Stroud, Muchow and Canny families. This house
was really a home to all and was always a haven for family members
during time of adversity.
